Every home has a feeling, a quiet look often called a “thread” that tells the story of the people who live there. This recognizable thread running through your rooms is what creates a unique look, your look. It is the essence that ties one room to another, forming a sense of harmony and belonging.
Many of you have already recognized a common element of my decorating style: the repeated use of blue and white. It’s obvious in the kitchen, but you will notice it throughout our home. From the flower pots surrounding the front door to the throw pillows on our bed, to the tiny details on the bathroom curtain, there is a blue & white theme.
Identifying that common thread in your home begins with noticing what you are consistently drawn to. Perhaps it is a favorite color palette, a recurring pattern, or a certain kind of furniture you always seem to choose. It may be the use of natural materials, the softness of aged wood, or the comfort of layers that speak to you. These small, repeated choices are the building blocks of your signature style.
We’ve talked about how to find these patterns by scrutinizing your Pinterest boards, so I’ll not bore you with that again. But, instead, let’s talk about the benefits of knowing your patterns, or threads. Once you’ve identified your decor patterns, you can build upon them. The goal is not sameness but connection. A home that feels thoughtfully composed rather than random. When you know what elements define your look, you can expand upon them with confidence. In the photo above, there is a gorgeous display of blue and white dishes from my local antique shop. Knowing that this color palette is a consistent decor move for me, I can purchase something from this antique booth with confidence (and I have!). Similarly, trying out a new piece that you know complements your existing colors and decor adds a freshness that fits seamlessly when they echo your established tone.
If I were asked, off the top of my head, what the common threads were in our home, I’d say:
*Blue & white decor & fabrics
*Brass lamps
*French bouillotte lamps
*Printed, pleated lampshades
*Art in the form of paintings and lithographs
*Antique furniture is usually in a mid to dark tone
Let me encourage you to take the time to identify the common threads in your decor. It may take time and involve some trial and error, but you’ll be able to decorate with greater confidence and make wise purchase choices.
