The Grass is Greener Where it’s Tended

Making the most of the home you have today

It’s easy to imagine that somewhere else must be better. A newer house, a bigger kitchen, a freshly remodeled bathroom—surely then it would be easier to love your home. But the truth is, a beautiful, welcoming home isn’t something you find by moving or upgrading.

If you have been around for a while you will have read the post and seen the video on moving towards minimalism. In the post and video I shared our year long journey of purging and simplifying our whole home. One of the unexpected benefits was with spaces that were easier to manage and well organized I loved my home even more than before! It was this “tending” that endeared me to our home.

A home is beautiful when it is loved. It’s something you create by caring for what you already have. The grass isn’t greener on the other side. It’s greener where it’s tended.

Small Acts, Big Impact

We often think of home projects in terms of big milestones, renovations, new furniture, and grand design updates. But sometimes, the most powerful way to transform a home isn’t by changing it, but by caring for it. This can be purging, cleaning, or mending what you have.

  • Polishing copper & brass.
  • Sweeping floors.
  • Cleaning windows.
  • Fluffing pillows.
  • Pulling weeds.
  • Folding throw blankets.

These small, almost invisible acts of care breathe life into your home. They’re what make a space feel loved, and love is what makes a house feel alive.

Pride in Stewardship and Gratitude in Ownership

There’s a quiet dignity in taking pride in what you have, even if it isn’t exactly what you dream of. A clean, cared-for home always feels better than a neglected, expensive one. If you are feeling a bit discouraged about where your home is, take 20 minutes and clean something ~ it will give you a sense of satisfaction every time!

You might not have designer drapes yet. Lovely wallpaper might be sitting on your wish list. But a tidy entryway, a table set for dinner, or a garden that’s been lovingly weeded and watered can be just as powerful in making a home feel warm and welcoming.

Care is a kind of beauty all its own.

And along with care comes something equally powerful: gratitude.

Gratitude shifts our focus.
Instead of seeing only what we lack, we begin to see the gifts right in front of us, the roof over our heads, the floor under our feet, the small corner of the world we get to call ours.

When you approach your home with gratitude, even the imperfections soften. That squeaky door, that uneven floorboard, that secondhand table, all of it becomes part of a life that’s been entrusted to you. Caring for it becomes less of a chore and more of an act of joyful stewardship.

Gratitude in ownership reminds us: this home, right here, right now, is a blessing.

Contentment Grows When You Nurture It

When you tend what you have, something happens: you start to love it more. The chipped dresser you dust weekly becomes a beloved piece of your story. The tiny kitchen you wipe down after every meal becomes a place of nourishment and connection. The living room you vacuum and rearrange feels cozy and inviting, no matter how humble it is. Contentment doesn’t come from having more. It comes from appreciating and caring for what’s already yours.

If you find yourself wishing for greener pastures, pause and look around. Maybe what you have just needs a little more tending, a little more care, a little more love. A home is made beautiful not just by what’s in it, but by the hands and hearts that care for it. Until next time,

Take care,

Rachel

Dear Rachel, what a lovely blog post! I’ve been thinking a lot about this topic lately..we have a house in our small town that is continuously being discussed on our town Facebook page. It’s right on the main road but is, to put it bluntly, an eyesore. They collect their household garbage in a trailer on their boulevard for months at a time. It smells and draws mice and rats to the neighborhood and on a windy day blows across the road and into the neighbors yards. Our town picks up our garbage for $2 per bag, every two weeks but they insist on collecting it in a trailer instead of paying$2 (less than a medium coffee at Tim Hortons) for a town garbage bag. What made me think so deeply about this topic is that housing, whether rented or owned, has become so expensive in our area and if you have a home to live in you are privileged. Regardless of whether you can afford expensive landscaping or renovation, it costs nothing to be tidy and clean. Keeping the grass cut and trimmed, dealing with trash in a timely fashion, showing respect for neighbors is just a few ways of showing gratitude for that privilege. We have so many homeless in our area that have no where to lay their heads at night that the least we can do is care for what we’ve been lucky enough to receive.

Kelly, well said and so true. I grew up extremely poor but always lived in a clean house with a clean yard. Mom taught us kids to take pride in what we had and to care for it as if it was the most expensive house in the neighborhood.
      Thanks for your comment.

Thank you again, as always, for taking the time to make and share this video. I had to run go make the bed and clean the kitchen before I could watch this. You inspire every time you post. I have come to appreciate what I am fortunate to have and be a better steward of my home. Your sweet spirit shows through and your posts motivate me to do better. You set a wonderful example. OK Rachel, you nailed it with this beautiful post! I feel like God has placed you in my life, although via the web, because He knows what is on my heart and in my mind and you just know how to put it into words, so well!!
Please write a book. You have a gift and so many people would love to have your words in writing, I am one of them! God Bless you all and have a beautiful week ahead…

Rachel, your post reminds me of a Joyce Meyer quote. She was telling a story about someone complaining about her house, which she didn’t keep clean. Joyce told her ” Why would God give you a better house when you don’t take care of the one he gave you?” Taking pride in your living space however large or small, honors our Lord. Bless you, Matt and your home!

Funny how your thoughts always come at the right time for me. I live in a development where people are always upgrading their homes and sometimes I can barely afford maintenance, nevermind upgrading, so I sometimes feel I should do more. But, my Granddaughter’s the one who tells me “if we just clean out, it’ll look nice”. Today I’m having lawn and tree maintenance done (not cheap) and she and I are purging inside the house, so your newsletter came at just the right time. We’re not buying new, we’re reimagining what we already have. Thanks, Rachel!

I loved this post, Rachel. Taking time to appreciate our lives and approach them from an attitude of gratitude is always a good move. And shout out to you for painting the inside of your cupboards as well as the outside. It drives me crazy when people don’t paint the inside.

    1. Rachel Stone July 2, 2025

Glad you enjoyed the post, Miss Therese!
Haha, yes, we own a painting company and definitely paint the insides of cabinets and drawers (and not the hinges!).
      Thanks for dropping by.
