Hello everyone! Today let’s talk about using thrifted & antique decor in our homes!

As much as I love the thrill of the hunt for home decor it’s even more fun to see those treasures become a part of the story of your home.

Here are a few stories from our house…

Pair of thrifted buffet lamps with dingy blue shades and bronze bases on a white kitchen counter
Close up of a faded blue lampshade with water stains and a frayed bottom edge
Bases of two thrifted bronze buffet lamps with ridged square feet and tulip shaped stems, before painting

This sad pair of lamps was sitting out for donation pickup when I scooped them up. The shades have expired, but the lamps worked & the bases have nice details. Great potential!

One lamp switch was cracked so Matt got a new one from the hardware store and replaced it ~ good as new!

Hand holding a white inline lamp cord switch on a clear gold cord, with a lamp base behind

Now for the simple makeover! Painter’s tape covers the tops & cords to prevent over-spray. If you’re wondering, the paint color Heirloom White is my go-to for a creamy white color.

Hand wiping a lamp base freshly painted pale gray blue, with blue painter's tape on the table
Close up of a distressed lamp base painted white with brown showing through at the ridged edges

While the paint is tacky firmly swipe across the details to add an aged look. This was my first try at distressing anything & it was easy!

Two thrifted buffet lamps painted pale blue gray with new cream bell shades on a white table

Here are the “new” lamps! The shades were thrifted for about $3 – $4 each. I love how the variety in shade styles gives the lamps different “personality” and a custom fit to a space.

The lamp with the narrow shade perches atop a stack of coffee table books by my favorite reading chair. In fact… the hand-embroidered bird tapestry, the English chintz pillow, & the vintage wing-back chair were all thrift shop treasures!

One “new” lamp brightens a corner of our living room. The light airy color inspired me to throw this matelasse coverlet (thrifted for $10) over the couch for spring. On the couch you see the DIY sweater pillow ~  from a thrifted cardigan. This pillow is used daily!

This elegant Gibson Girl watercolor painting caught my eye one day when I was antiquing with my sister.

She looks right at home in our English Cottage guest bedroom & makes me think of that special day with my sister.

Thrift store shelf of baskets, a wooden berry basket and a bowl of yellow daffodils

A simple faux bouquet of potted daffodils was spotted hiding among the baskets at the thrift store ~ perfect for welcoming spring!

Hutch shelves with thrifted pitcher, floral platter, framed Paris street painting, sugar bowl and yellow daffodils

These cheery flowers brightened our home last spring on open shelving along with other thrifted decor & recently in our spring entry refresh. These are a few stories from pieces we’ve discovered as salvage, thrift, or antique finds. Thank you for joining me today as we explored different ways to use thrifted & antique décor in our homes. I hope you found some inspiration!

Warmly,

Rachel

Those lamps turned out great! Distressing them really helped them look more antique. What a great way to revive an old lamp and make your home look cheery. The other items look great also! I love the idea of the mirror to lighten the cooking space. Maybe try painting and distressing it also?

      Hi Annie!
You’re right, painting & distressing really did make a difference with the lamps ~ I’m considering something for the mirror, but still thinking on color…
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.
      Happy Spring!

Wonderful thrift store finds and I love the story about the picture in the guest bedroom reminding you of your shopping trip with your sister. Most of the stuff I keep hanging on to bring back special memories of someone in my family!!
