Winter invites us to turn inward, to create spaces that feel comforting and calm. Yet it is easy for coziness to slip into clutter when every surface is filled. The secret is to focus on atmosphere rather than abundance. It really doesn’t take much.
Begin with light. The soft glow of a table lamp or a few candles can change the mood of an entire room. Add texture through natural fibers, linen, wool, or velvet, to make the space feel inviting. On the sofa, we have a couple of soft throw blankets and a pair of velvet cushions inviting you to curl up with a book and a hot cup of tea. Scent plays a quiet role, too. A simmering pot of citrus and cinnamon or a softly burning candle adds another layer of warmth.
As many people do, I like to think of January as a palate cleanser. Less is so much more as you look into the year ahead and make plans. Choose only a few cherished pieces to display. A favorite book on the side table, a basket of pine cones by the fire, or a single vase of winter greenery, more than shelves filled to the brim.
